Olathe woman dies after crash on I-35 exit ramp at 75th Street in Merriam

The northbound I-35 entrance ramp from 75th Street was closed for nearly three hours as the Kansas Highway Patrol investigated the single-vehicle crash.

A single-vehicle crash left an Olathe woman dead on Monday morning along I-35 in Merriam.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash log, Angela M. Carter, 52, was driving a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban on the exit ramp from northbound I-35 to 75th Street at about 10 a.m.

Troopers say the Suburban struck a guardrail, about 200 feet south of 75th Street, then continued north on the exit ramp, drove across 75th Street, struck several raised medians and then crashed into a ditch.

The Suburban stopped in a small ditch just northeast of the intersection.

Overland Park firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics responded along with police officers from Overland Park and Merriam.

Recorded radio traffic from those units indicated that the woman’s condition was possibly a medical emergency and not a trauma caused by the crash.

The Highway Patrol’s crash log summarizes the incident as a “fatality crash” and makes no mention of a possible medical emergency.

According to county mapping, the south side of 75th Street is Overland Park, while the north side is Merriam.

Troopers closed the entrance ramp to northbound I-35 from 75th Street as they investigated the scene.

The ramp reopened before 1 p.m.
