St. Ann students raise awareness of childhood hunger with canned food drive

St. Ann Elementary fourth graders on Monday completed a project sure to raise awareness about an unfortunately common problem in America: childhood hunger.

St. Ann students with the American flag their class constructed from canned goods.

For the past several weeks, the students had been collecting canned goods to donate to the Catholic Charities’ Emergency Assistance food pantry. Prior to Monday’s event, the students constructed an American flag of canned goods in the school halls as a way to highlight the fact that one in five children are food insecure in the United States.

On Monday, the students loaded the 150 grocery bags full of donated canned items into a Catholic Charities truck.

“We are so grateful to these children for the impact they have made to help fight childhood hunger in their community,” said Catholic Charities program director Kim Brabits.
