Two high school students were taken to the hospital Wednesday after the car they were riding in crashed into a tree on Cherokee Drive just before the intersection with 71st Street in Prairie Village.
When Prairie Village police arrived on the scene at approximately 10:20 a.m., the found a white Dodge Charger resting in the yard of a Cherokee Drive home, its front half completely destroyed by impact with a tree. Another car, a blue Hyundai, sustained minor damages. Its driver, an adult, had no injuries.
The juveniles in the front and rear passenger seats of the Charger sustained major injuries, and were transported to the hospital, where they are in severe condition. The driver of the Charger, also a high school student, did not require major medical intervention.
A nurse who happened to be at home on Cherokee Drive at the time of the crash was able to assist the victims until police arrive moments later.
Police had the street blocked off for a few hours after the crash as they examined the scene. Prairie Village was assisted by the Shawnee Police Department in the preliminary investigation, which found that speed was likely a factor in the incident. Police said that road conditions do not appear to have contributed to the crash.
