Joy Wok Super Buffet in Overland Park eyes late June opening for new Metcalf location

Joy Wok Super Buffet & Hibachi Grill has set a tentative time frame for when it will launch its newly relocated restaurant in Overland Park.

When and where: Owner of the popular eatery are now hoping to open sometime in late June.

The Chinese buffet is taking up room in the former site of Plaza III Steakhouse at 12631 Metcalf Ave.

The new location is just a few blocks south of Joy Wok’s former space in the Overland Crossing shopping center at 11920 Metcalf Ave., which closed in late December.

Background: Joy Wok general manager Kevin Liu said the restaurant’s relocation came about after a big retailer started taking note of Joy Wok’s former location.

A new landlord who purchased the Overland Crossing shopping center had wanted to buy the business in order to put in a Whole Foods Market in, he said.

Whole Foods, which is currently located at 119th and Glenwood Street, gained approval to move to the shopping center in August.

The details: With the move, Joy Wok will not nearly double in size with the new 15,000-square-foot space. The restaurant also plans to revamp both its decor and menu.

Liu said the interior design is taking inspiration from the buffet styles seen in places like Hollywood Casino.

Additionally, he said the menu will also be expanded with items like more American foods, while continuing to serve classic Chinese dishes, including orange chicken and pan-fried noodles.

The new location will also have a drinks and sushi bar, which will be triple the size of the restaurant’s current one.

Key quote: “We are currently still under construction for remodeling right now. To bring better service, quality, and better experience, it took longer than what was expected,” Joy Wok wrote on its Facebook page. “We will try to re-open as soon as possible when everything is completely done.”
