AdventHealth Shawnee Mission unveils $30M renovation so far

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission recently completed phase one of renovations to its original, 50-year-old hospital tower at its Merriam campus.

The renovation at the hospital at 9100 W. 74th St. overall is expected to total $30 million and includes upgrades to patient rooms, staff areas and exteriors, according to a hospital press release.

Remodel focused on original part of main building

  • The improvements include new work stations, physician offices and staff hoteling spaces, according to the press release.
  • Patients and families will also see upgrades in flooring, lighting, bathrooms and “floor-to-ceiling windows in each patient room,” according to the release.
  • “We know environment is an important factor in the experience of patients, families and our team members,” president Michael Knecht said in the press release. “With these upgrades to our Shawnee Mission hospital campus, the physical space better aligns with the exceptional care we provide.”

New beds will be added in next phase of work

  • There will also be renovations to family waiting areas and elevator lobbies during the next phase.
  • Some of the units that will be impacted by ongoing work are short stay, oncology and orthopedic care.
  • There will also be 11 new inpatient beds added as a result of the project, new plumbing, improved security access and emergency power to all areas, according to the release.

The renovation should be complete by November

  • Construction on the north side of the tower, which began early last year, is anticipated to be completed in early February, AdventHealth says.
  • Phase two of construction on the south side of the tower will begin once all units are transitioned into the renovated space, according to the release.

AdventHealth also building a new cancer center

  • The current renovations to the original hospital tower are separate from a project to build a new $76 million cancer center.
  • That project officially broke ground last fall and is expected to be completed next year.
  • The new three-story cancer center will replace the hospital’s existing cancer center, which is in a medical office building to the northwest of the main medical building.
