What drivers need to know about upcoming road work for 69Express

A 90-day single lane closure on U.S. 69 Highway northbound at the West 151st Street bridge is scheduled to begin Thursday, April 7.

The closure is part of the 69Express project, which will add express toll lanes going both directions on U.S. 69 between West 103rd and West 151st streets. The project also includes construction of 11 noise walls and improvements to the West 167th Street interchange.

U.S. 69 will only have one lane open in both directions through July 7

  • For the 90-day period, alternating lane closures will occur near West 151st Street for bridge rehabilitation.
  • Kansas Department of Transportation officials said ramps at West 151st Street will be affected. KDOT anticipates traffic delays in the area and advises drivers to seek alternate routes during this time.
  • Detour routes have yet to be announced. North-sound corridors adjacent to the construction area include Pflumm, Quivira, Switzer and Antioch roads generally to the east of U.S. 69, and Metcalf and Nall avenues generally to the west.
  • The 90-day construction schedule is also subject to changes and weather delays, according to the 69Express website.

Nightly closures will also continue to take place

  • KDOT officials said shoulder work along many locations of northbound and southbound U.S. 69, including work on ramps, will take place in the coming weeks to prepare for bridge widening work and utility relocation.
  • From 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday, night construction will result in lane closures on West 135th Street for three weeks. Crews will close lanes as needed for bridge work between April 3 and 21.
  • A full list of ongoing construction and closures can be found here on the 69Express’ Status Updates page.

The toll lanes are scheduled to be finished by 2025

  • In February, state and city officials met at the Hilltop Conference Center to celebrate the official groundbreaking ceremony for the multi-year project.
  • KDOT officials estimate the project will take about three years to complete.
  • While the U.S. 69 express lanes are expected to be completed by the end of 2025, the entire project — including construction of the noise walls as well as West 167th Street interchange improvements — is anticipated to wrap up by 2026.
