This fall, Leawood resident Susan Hatten is turning over a new leaf.
After a long career in advertising in Chicago, Hatten recently moved back to the Kansas City area to be with her family. But she didn’t feel ready to fully retire and instead decided to try a new venture — opening her own small business.
Hatten’s store, Lalli’s Boutique, will open its doors in Leawood at the end of October.

Lalli’s Boutique will operate at 5210 W. 116th Pl.
- The store took over a space on the east end of Leawood’s Park Place shopping center.
- It neighbors Bella’s Bridesmaids at the outdoor complex.
- Once it opens, Lalli’s Boutique will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The store will specialize in women’s apparel
- Lalli’s Boutique will offer women’s clothing, jewelry and accessories — “lots of purses”, Hatten said, — in addition to home decor.
- Hatten characterized the store’s inventory as geared toward women between 35 and 60 years old but still remaining up-to-date with trends.
- “It’s kind of eclectic,” she said. “(It’s for) women who like to keep up with current trends, so it’s going to be stylish and trendy stuff.”
The store’s name has a family connection
- Hatten bought the store’s fixtures from a friend and former coworker in Chicago — who had also left advertising to start her own boutique.
- The store’s name, Lalli’s Boutique, comes from the name Hatten’s grandchildren call her.
- She said she chose Park Place because of the high foot traffic and city feel of the neighborhood, and she hopes the boutique can serve as a place for community events as well as a place to shop.
- “I’m really looking forward to meeting customers and fellow business owners, and just really becoming a part of the community,” she said. “We want this to be a place where people look forward to coming and seeing what we have.”
