Justyn Ross, Chiefs wide receiver, charged with domestic battery in JoCo

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Justyn Ross sat silently during his court appearance Tuesday afternoon in Johnson County.

Ross, 23, is charged with two misdemeanors stemming from an alleged domestic violence altercation that occurred Monday afternoon inside his Shawnee apartment.

The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office has charged Ross with domestic battery and criminal damage to property under $1,000.

Ryan Ginie has been hired as Ross’ attorney.

Ginie entered a not guilty plea on behalf of Justyn Ross, who appeared in court via video conferencing from the Johnson County Adult Detention Center across the street from the courthouse in Olathe.

Recorded radio traffic indicates that on Monday afternoon, the victim told 911 dispatchers that Ross had been “dragging her through the house,” had “torn up the house,” and “broke her cell phone.”

The victim called 911 from a neighbor’s apartment, and no injuries were reported in the incident.

Prosecutors requested a $2,500 bond and a no-contact order stating, “This is a high lethality case.”

Mr. Ginie requested that his client be released on personal recognizance, stating that Ross has no priors, the allegations are misdemeanors and that he lives and works in the area.

“I think a signature bond would be appropriate in this case,” Mr. Ginie told the court.

A personal recognizance bond, often called a signature bond, means Ross would not have to put up any money to be released from jail. He would instead sign paper work stating that he will show up at his next court appearance as ordered by the court.

The judge granted the request for a personal recognizance bond and established a no-contact order with the victim.

Ross was ordered not to return to his residence until Tuesday evening to allow the victim time to remove some of her belongings from the apartment.

He was released from the Johnson County Adult Detention Center just before 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.

His next court appearance, a diversion hearing, has been scheduled for December 4 at 1:30 p.m.
