Overland Park OKs improvements to aging Stanley Square complex

The Stanley Square Shopping Center located near the northwest corner of 151st Street and U.S. Highway 69 is on track to get a new look.

The retail complex, which dates back to the late 1980s, currently has a Rally House, Golden Belt Beef, Top Soup Yunnan Noodle, an international Halal grocer and a Dollar Tree.

A renovation plan calls for exterior improvements to the existing strip mall structures as well as the addition of two completely new stand-alone buildings that will eventually host a coffee shop and restaurant, respectively.

On Monday, the Overland Park City Council gave the go-ahead to a revised preliminary development plan for the proposed improvements and expansion as part of their the body’s consent agenda.

That means the Stanley Square plan wasn’t individually discussed as the city council approved it alongside a series of other procedural items previously recommended for approval by the Overland Park Planning Commission.

What’s planned at Stanley Square?

  • According to city documents, the site plan shows exterior upgrades for all of the shop spaces currently in the main strip of the center.
  • The plan also shows the construction of two new pad sites at Stanley Square on either side of the center.
  • Parking lots improvements are also part of the proposal.
  • A nearby McDonalds and BP gas station that sit along 151st Street are not included in the Stanley Square improvements.
  • Henry Klover, of Lenexa-based Klover Architects, told the planning commission last month that the renovations and additions will mark a “definite improvement” for Stanley Square.

New drive-thru coffee shop, restaurant coming to Stanley Square

  • During the improvement work at Stanley Square, the overall building footprint in the shopping district will grow as well with the addition of two new stand-alone pad sites for food and drink options.
  • One of the pad sites — located on the western part of the center along Hardy Street — will be a drive-thru coffee shop, though exactly which brand plans to take over the site is unclear.
  • On the eastern side of the district, a sit-down restaurant is shown as part of the plan, though the tenant for that space remains unclear.
  • Additionally, city documents show a new patio area on the tenant space nearest to U.S. Highway 69, which was most recently home to a Pizza Shoppe location.
