Overland Park counts 8,000+ rides in first year of scooter and bike pilot

Share this story:

In the first year of a two-year electronic scooter and bike pilot program in Overland Park, residents logged more than 8,300 rides on the devices provided by Lime.

Of a total of 8,352 rides logged in the city last year, 6,730 of those were on scooters while 1,622 were on bikes, said Traffic Engineer Elizabeth Nagaishi during an Overland Park City Council Public Works Committee meeting last month.

That total represents the activity of 2,648 unique riders, according to the city.

Lime started the pilot program with Overland Park last spring after Bird — another e-scooter and e-bike company operating in other KC metro cities — abruptly removed its devices from Overland Park in the midst of a previous pilot program.

Bird, which began its Overland Park pilot in 2022, said its rollback in the city was due to internal staffing issues.

Overland Park made about $2,500 on the pilot in 2024

  • Since the devices were first deployed last April, Overland Park has collected $2,553 from the deal.
  • That’s due to Lime’s annual $500 administrative fee to the city.
  • Additionally, Overland Park gets 25 cents per ride taken on a Lime e-scooter or e-bike within city limits.
  • In 2024, the city also fielded about 15 feedback comments from citizens about the scooters, which frequently had to do with e-scooters or e-bikes that were “inappropriately parked,” Nagaishi said.
  • However, she said there were no “serious issues” documented during the first year of the pilot, and Lime responded quickly to complaints.

Lime could deploy more e-scooters, e-bikes in 2025

  • Lime has permission to deploy up to 400 total e-bikes and e-scooters in Overland Park city limits.
  • In 2024, Lime started with a local fleet of about 200.
  • Initially, the scooters and bikes were concentrated around downtown Overland Park, but Lime has since deployed more devices all across the city.

Looking ahead:

  • During the chilly winter months, Lime has put away all of its scooters and bikes.
  • The expectation is that they’ll be redeployed when the weather starts to warm up in the spring, likely in April.
  • At the end of 2025, the city and Lime will discuss whether to keep Lime e-scooters and e-bikes in Overland Park and what that might look like.
  • Overland Park also maintains the option to start a pilot with an additional e-scooter and/or e-bike vendor.

Looking back: Lime will bring e-scooters, e-bikes back to Overland Park
