Driver who crashed into Fairway front yard faces felony fleeing and DUI charges

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the chase began on I-635 in Kansas City, Kansas, and a trooper lost sight of the fleeing truck on Mission Road before it crashed.

A man is in custody after leading the Kansas Highway Patrol on a high-speed chase that started in Kansas City, Kansas, and ended in a Fairway front yard.

Technical Trooper Tiffany Baylark told the Post in an emailed response to questions on Monday morning that a trooper attempted to stop a driver as he entered southbound Interstate 635 from I-70 in Kansas City, Kansas, around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday.

“At 10:35 p.m., the trooper advised they stopped on I-635 southbound just north of Kansas Avenue,” Baylark said. “At 10:38 p.m., the trooper advised the vehicle took off again at a high rate of speed, I-635 southbound approaching Swartz.”

Baylark said the trooper called off the pursuit after losing sight of it southbound on Mission Road.

A cross-street for where the pursuit ended was not provided, and it’s not clear how long or if the trooper chased the truck down Mission Road.

“At 10:47 p.m., Johnson County advised the vehicle crashed, and the driver was attempting to flee on foot,” Baylark said. “The trooper made it on scene and was able to take the subject into custody without further incident.”

A crash in a Fairway front yard

The crash happened along southbound Mission Road at 53rd Street.

Where Mission Road curves west in front of St. Agnes Catholic Church, the driver continued south into the front yard of a home on Chadwick Street. The truck hit two trees, narrowly missed a direct hit on the house and heavily damaged at least two parked vehicles in the home’s driveway.

A resident of the house told the Post that she watched from a second-floor window as the suspect tried to kick his way out of his overturned truck, which was now in her driveway, partially on top of her SUV.

The suspect was subsequently booked into the Wyandotte County Jail in Kansas City, Kansas. The jail log does not list his age, date of birth or where he’s from.

Police at the crash scene told the Post that the 2020 Ford Raptor was registered to the suspect with an address in Missouri.

The suspect remains in Wyandotte County Jail custody on a 48-hour hold.

He is facing seven charges stemming from the pursuit, including at least two felonies.

Those charges include two counts of felony fleeing a law enforcement officer by engaging in reckless driving, criminal damage to property, driving under the influence, interference with law enforcement, and possession of a firearm while under the influence.

According to the Wyandotte County jail log, his first court appearance has not been scheduled.

The Post does not identify suspects until they have been formally charged.
