The first chance to vote in person for the much-anticipated midterm elections is coming up this Saturday. Are you registered yet?
If not, you have Monday and Tuesday to get it done. If you aren’t sure if you’re registered — or if you just want to double–check — there’s an easy way to do that.
How to register
The Johnson County Election Office lists three ways to register to vote that apply to most people. (Military service members overseas have a separate way to vote and register.)
Online — Registration can be done online with a driver’s license or non-driver identification card. The Kansas Secretary of State’s office asks for personal information and verification of eligibility.
According to the site, the county election office will notify applicants whether the registration was completed successfully or whether further action is needed.
On paper — A paper application is another option. Paper applications are available in PDF form from the election office and can be returned by email to [email protected] or by text to 913-953-9539.
In person — County election personnel will take registrations at the election office, 2101 East Kansas City Road, Olathe.
Their hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Check your registration status
The Secretary of State’s office also has an online tool to double-check whether you’re registered and get a sample ballot.
VoterView will check your status after you enter your name and birthdate.
If it finds you, it will give your Election Day precinct voting place, a sample ballot and even your voting history and the various districts you are in.
If it doesn’t find you, see the above options for getting registered before the end of the day Tuesday.
Early voting starts this week
By mail voting — If you requested an advance ballot by mail, you can begin to look for it soon.
County election workers will begin mailing them Wednesday, Oct. 14.
In-person advance voting — Begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and runs through noon on Monday, November 2.
