The Cosentino’s Price Chopper at 119th and Metcalf is closing, its owners announced, and a liquidation sale of all remaining items starts Wednesday.
The longtime family grocer, which owns and operates dozens of stores in the Kansas City metro, announced Monday that the Price Chopper at the Rosana Square shopping center in Overland Park was going out of business.
“Cosentino’s extends its sincere gratitude to the loyal customers and team members who have supported the 119th and Metcalf Ave location over the years,” John Cosentino, owner and vice president of Cosentino Group, was quoted in a news release.
“It has been a privilege to serve the community, and the company looks forward to welcoming customers at nearby Price Chopper and Cosentino’s Market locations,” he added.
The company said it was “actively exploring opportunities for a new location,” noting that this was the first store closure in Cosentino’s history. (Another Price Chopper closed several months ago under different ownership. More on that below.)
Employees at the Price Chopper at 119th and Metcalf will be offered jobs at one of the other 31 stores the company owns, according to the news release.
A liquidation sale of all remaining goods and items in the store began on Wednesday. The store will remain open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. until the company finishes the sale.
Cosentino’s did not include a final closure date in its release, and a company spokesperson could not be immediately reached for additional clarification.
This is the second Overland Park Price Chopper to close in the past six months.
In August, Balls Food Stores announced the closure of the Price Chopper at 75th and Metcalf. That store had been open at that location since 1994.
That store also held a liquidation sale, with remaining items 33% off. The building has remained vacant since the store closed.
Cosentino’s release did not indicate why the Price Chopper on 119th is closing, though there is increasing competition among grocery stores in that area.
At or near the busy juncture of 119th and Metcalf (which splits into Blue Valley Parkway there), at least five other grocery stores are in business, including a newly relocated Whole Foods, the Pan-Asia Supermarket that also recently moved, an Aldi, a Target and a Walmart Supercenter.
Property records for the Price Chopper at 119th go back to the 1990s.
