Man shot into parents’ Shawnee home before standoff in Overland Park, affidavit says

The suspect, Andrew McCann, was taken into custody without incident after an hours-long standoff on Feb. 15 at a home investigators say is owned by his aunt.

Shawnee Police say a man fired at least 10 gunshots into his parents’ home near 71st Street and Quivira Road as they slept earlier this month.

That incident led to a standoff at another home in Overland Park, with the man taken into custody without incident and no one at either address injured.

Police were first called to the Shawnee house in the 7000 block of Quivira Road at 9:16 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15, for a report of a broken window.

A criminal affidavit released by Johnson County District Court at the Post’s request states that the responding officer found a large window on the southeast corner of the house had bullet holes in it.

The residents of the house told the officer they believe their adult son, Andrew McCann, was responsible for the damage, which occurred between 1 and 2 a.m. the same morning, while the couple slept.

They reported hearing a “loud crash” in the house, which they initially believed was caused by one of their pets.

McCann’s parents told officers that their son had been behaving erratically after he had stopped taking prescription medication for mental health issues and that he had also “taken several firearms with him when he last left.”

Police found about 10 casings on the sidewalk leading to the back door of the home, approximately 20 to 25 feet from the house.

Multiple holes were found in the side of the house leading into the home’s kitchen, where rounds had become lodged inside the interior wall, and several had ricocheted into an area of cabinets.

According to the affidavit, the window that the rounds were fired into is adjacent to the bedrooms where McCann’s parents were sleeping. No one inside the house was injured.

Tip, traffic cameras helped track suspect

Police found McCann’s truck on video from a nearby intersection and also from a tip from an anonymous neighbor.

The intersection video shows McCann’s truck pulling into his parents’ driveway and then leaving south on Quivira after several minutes.

The neighbor’s video showed what police believe to be the same truck driving south on Quivira at 1:57 a.m. that Sunday.

The affidavit says McCann has an apartment in Merriam but had also been staying with his aunt in a house near 123rd Street and Switzer Road in Overland Park.

Later that morning, investigators found McCann at the aunt’s home, where he had barricaded himself inside.

Suspect taken into custody in Overland Park

According to the affidavit, McCann communicated by email during standoff negotiations, referring to police with homophobic and ableist slurs, saying that he was not going to come out without a fight.

The affidavit goes on to say that after more than two hours, McCann exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident.

McCann refused to answer any questions from investigators.

He made his first court appearance on Tuesday, Feb. 17, where he was charged with criminal discharge of a firearm, recklessly at an occupied dwelling, as well as interference with a law enforcement officer; obstruct/resist/oppose felony warrant service or execution.

Both charges are felonies, and he has entered not guilty pleas.

A public defender is representing McCann.

He remains in the custody of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office on a $100,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m.
