Overland Park Police search for driver of stolen pickup who fled crash scene

The driver of a Tesla struck by the Ford F-250 was sent to the hospital in stable condition. Police searched the area near the crash for the pickup driver without success.

Overland Park Police say that the driver of a stolen pickup truck crashed into another driver and then ran from the scene late Sunday night.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the intersection of 143rd Street and Nall Avenue at 11:10 p.m. for a reported T-bone crash.

Recorded radio traffic from arriving firefighters reported two vehicles with heavy damage and one driver still inside one of the vehicles.

In an emailed response to questions, Overland Park Police spokesperson Ofc. John Lacy said a blue Ford F-250 pickup truck struck a white Tesla at the intersection, which is near the Lionsgate golf course and also St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Parish.

The Tesla was driving south on Nall and was hit on the driver’s side by the Ford F-250, which was traveling westbound on 143rd Street.

The impact caused the Tesla to spin and stop facing east on the south side of the intersection. The truck was also spun around and came to a stop in the grass near the southwest corner of the intersection.

Firefighters worked for about 10 minutes to remove the driver’s side doors of the Tesla to safely extricate the injured driver.

A Johnson County Med-Act ambulance transported the driver of the Tesla, only identified as a woman in her late 50s, to an area hospital in stable condition.

Lacy said the driver of the pickup truck ran from the scene before officers arrived.

“A perimeter was established; however, we were unable to locate the suspect,” Lacy said. “The truck was later determined to be stolen out of Overland Park in February.”

Overland Park officers were assisted in their search by Leawood Police and a Merriam officer with a drone.

The search lasted for about an hour.

Police have not released a description of the suspect driver.

No other details have been released.
