Discount clothing retailer Burlington eyes shuttered Joann space in Shawnee

The New Jersey-based clothing company filed plans to move into the space at the Parkway Plaza complex off Shawnee Mission Parkway.

A one-time fabric store could soon house a discount clothing retailer instead.

New Jersey-based Burlington has filed plans to open a new store in the former Joann space off Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee.

Burlington aims to come to 11215 Shawnee Mission Parkway

  • The store is planning to occupy a space at the Parkway Plaza shopping center, just off Shawnee Mission Parkway.
  • Joann occupied that space for roughly 15 years before its closure.
  • The space is also near Crunch Fitness and City Thrift at the shopping center.

Another Burlington is coming to Johnson County

  • The New Jersey-based retailer has another new store in the works, off 95th Street and Quivira Road in Overland Park.
  • That store, near Oak Park Mall, is scheduled to open in spring 2027.
  • The company also has another store further south in Overland Park (off 119th Street and Blue Valley Parkway) and in Olathe.
  • Burlington also has another Shawnee store at 6451 Quivira Road. Officials with the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment to clarify whether the new Shawnee store will be a relocation of that store or an entirely new one.

Joann closed in 2025

  • The fabric and craft retailer had two Johnson County stores at the time of its closure, following a broader nationwide bankruptcy filing.
  • Besides its Shawnee store, Joann’s other former space was at 115th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park.
  • That has now been spoken for by a new occupant as well, with indoor slide park Slick City planning to open in that space.
