Overland Park Police are looking for a driver who ran from a serious-injury crash at 159th Street and Antioch Road at about 9:45 p.m. on Monday.
Officer John Lacy, a spokesperson for the Overland Park Police Department, says a blue Chevrolet Malibu was driving south on Antioch at high speed when the driver ran a red light and hit a westbound SUV.
The Ford SUV was knocked through a fence on the southwest corner of the intersection.
Lacy says the driver of the Malibu had been involved in a disturbance at Walmart, 11701 Metcalf Ave., and ran from the car after causing the crash.
Overland Park firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act responded to the scene to report two vehicles with heavy damage and two people trapped inside the crashed SUV.
Firefighters removed the doors of the SUV to get the injured driver and passenger out.
Two women, both in their early 20s, were transported by Med-Act ambulances to an area hospital with serious injuries.
Lacy says officers set a perimeter to search for the driver of the Malibu, using a drone and K-9; however, the suspect was not located.
The Olathe Police Department assisted in the search with a K-9.
“The driver is believed to be a resident of south Johnson County,” Lacy said. “The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office went by an address listed for him in the county, and his relative said he was not at home.”
Officers from the Overland Park Police Department’s Traffic Unit were called out to investigate the crash.
The eastbound lanes of 159th Street were closed from Eby Street to Antioch Road as those officers documented the crash scene.
No other details were immediately available.
