A retailer that got its start on the East Coast has officially debuted in Johnson County.
Last week, discount retailer Black Friday Outlet “soft opened” in Shawnee — its first store in the Kansas City metro area.
Black Friday Outlet opened at 6495 Quivira Road
- The store moved into a space at the Shawnee Village shopping center, just off 65th Street and Quivira Road in Shawnee.
- There, it operates near Bates City Bar-B-Que and DeiRel Sushi & Boba.
- Black Friday Outlet is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday through Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.
Black Friday Outlet offers “treasures” for bargain hunters
The discount retailer’s bins are stocked weekly with a variety of discounted items — everything from name-brand clothing to electronics and home goods.
Items start off at the store’s highest set price ($12 at the Shawnee store) when the store’s bins are freshly stocked on Friday mornings.
Then throughout the week, prices decrease by the day, until the store closes on Thursday to restock the bins and reopens with new items and deals on Friday.
“It’s like the opening of a whole new store every Friday,” said Suliman Ghunaim, manager at Black Friday Outlet’s corporate office.
This marks the first Black Friday Outlet store in JoCo
The new Shawnee store is also the first in the wider Kansas City metro area for the brand.
When it came to location, Ghunaim said that the Shawnee space was chosen for practical reasons.
“Shawnee was kind of centralized, and we found it (to be) a decent location as far as size, because we obviously need to consider the size,” he said. “It needs to be something that can constantly be able to hold more than 100 people, which is tougher to find nowadays.”
With the soft opening underway, the store will celebrate its grand opening sometime in September.
Hundreds of people showed up at the store’s first day open in Shawnee last week, though, said Ghunaim, suggesting that Black Friday Outlet has already received quite the warm welcome even before the grand opening next month.
“We’re very happy to be in the community,” he said. “It’s exciting to see how happy people are when they show up and get something really nice; and when they get it for only $12, they’re very excited, very happy, and pretty much earned a lifelong customer.”
