Balls Foods Stores Inc., the parent company of several Johnson County grocery stores, including Price Choppers and Hen House locations, now calls Mission home.
After years in Kansas City, Kansas, the grocery store company moved its corporate headquarters to 5830 Woodson St., just to the north of the Mission Veterinary Emergency & Specialty on Johnson Drive.
Balls Foods Stores operates 25 grocery stores across the Kansas City metro overall.
A representative of Balls Foods Stores could not be reached for comment for this story.
A look at the building
The building at 5830 Woodson Road is a nearly 13,000-square-foot space near the heart of downtown Mission.
It is closest to Balls Foods Stores’ Hen House at the Shops of Fairway and the Price Chopper in Roeland Park at 4950 Roe Blvd.
The building is also situated near ScriptPro, a pharmaceutical company.

The grocery company got its start in 1923 when Sidney and Mollie Ball opened their first grocery store off of 16th and Stewart streets in Kansas City, Kansas, according to Balls Foods Stores’ website.
Balls Foods Stores opened several grocery stores in Kansas City, Kansas, over the next 50 years, including one at 47th and Mission Road in 1960.
A Hen House in Lenexa that opened in 1990 appears to be the first Johnson County grocery store operated by Balls Foods.
Balls Foods previously operated out of a space at 5300 Speaker Road, which is near Associated Wholesale Grocers off of Turner Diagonal Freeway.
It’s unclear what led to the move from Kansas City, Kansas, to Mission.
A new Balls Foods’ Hen House coming to PV
As Balls Foods Stores moves its operation to Mission, it’s also in the middle of bringing a new Hen House to the Shops of Prairie Village.
The grocery store is leaving its current space at the Shops to take the first floor of the redeveloped Macy’s on the southern side of the shopping center. There, it will be adjacent to Big Grove Brewery, which opened earlier this year.
Last year, Mike Beal, the chief operational officer of Balls Foods Stores, told the Prairie Village City Council that the plan is to draw customers to the new store from across the state line.
Beal said the store “is going to be the best grocery store anywhere close to this in Kansas City.”
It will feature a sushi area, floral department, an indoor-outdoor customer cafe and energy-efficient refrigerant technology.
