A gardening center is gearing up to say goodbye to Johnson County.
By the end of this year, Iowa-based Earl May Garden Centers plans to close its Shawnee nursery, with closing sales now underway.
Earl May is at 21700 Midland Drive
- The shop occupies a space just off Monticello Road and Shawnee Mission Parkway in western Shawnee.
- The Shawnee store has been open since 1999.
- Earl May is near the Harvest Ridge Covenant Church and Nick and Jake’s in Shawnee.
Earl May will close at the end of the year

- Employees at the Shawnee nursery said Earl May’s closure date is Dec. 7.
- Until then, closure sales are underway, with discounts of up to 60% on various items.
- Earl May offers a wide variety of plants and flowers, from roses and perennials to fruit trees and evergreen shrubs.
This was the only Earl May store in Johnson County
- The Shawnee store was also the last remaining Earl May nursery in the wider Kansas City metro area.
- The Iowa-based company previously had a store in Kansas City, Missouri, but that store has since closed too.
- Outside of Kansas and Missouri, Earl May also has nurseries in its home state, Iowa, and in Nebraska.
