Semi driver killed in overnight rollover crash on I-35 in Olathe

The crash, which happened just after 2 a.m. near 127th Street, shut down northbound I-35 at Santa Fe Street for about eight hours Wednesday morning.

A California man was killed in a tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 35 in Olathe early Wednesday morning.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 2:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-35, about a half mile south of the 127th Street overpass.

According to the online crash log, Jatin Kumar, 25, of Santa Clara, California, was driving a 2020 Freightliner semi that was hauling a trailer.

In the crash narrative, Troopers say the truck was being driven northbound when it drifted onto the right shoulder.

“Driver overcorrected and the semi overturned at milepost 218.6,” the crash report said. “The semi truck struck the median wall and came to rest at milepost 218.8.”

Recorded radio traffic from Olathe firefighters reported that one person died at the scene.

Troopers say Kumar was not wearing a seat belt.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Troopers closed the northbound lanes of I-35 at Santa Fe Street for about eight hours Wednesday morning as they investigated the crash.

Two northbound lanes reopened shortly after noon as crews continued unloading the crashed tractor-trailer’s cargo onto another trailer.

As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, northbound traffic on I-35 remained heavy and was moving slowly back to Santa Fe Street.

No estimate is available for when cleanup will be completed.
