A 59-year-old man has minor injuries after crashing his minivan into the Blue River in southern Overland Park on Monday evening.
Firefighters from Overland Park and Leawood responded to the scene along with Johnson County Med-Act paramedics for a possible water rescue near 159th Street and Kenneth Road just after 7:40 p.m.
Arriving firefighters found that police had located the crashed vehicle in the woods near the 15600 block of Kenneth Road.
Recorded radio traffic indicated police helped the 59-year-old male driver out of his overturned minivan, and he walked back to the road with officers.
At the scene, Overland Park Police Sgt. Dianna Johnson told the Post that the man had been driving south on Kenneth Road.
As the road curved slightly, the van continued straight, crashed through at least one tree and then dropped 20 feet into the Blue River.
The van overturned and came to rest with its passenger side in the river.
Johnson said police received a crash notification from the man’s phone but were initially unable to locate the crash site. She said that a ping of the cellphone’s location helped officers locate the crashed van and its driver.
Johnson County Med-Act paramedics transported the man to an area hospital with minor cuts and scrapes.
According to a tow truck operator working to recover the van, it was about 30 feet off the road and down a sheer 20-foot cliff.
While attempting to recover the van, the tow truck operator snapped his truck’s winch line. Two additional tow trucks from the same company were called and were also unable to retrieve the van from the river.
Around midnight, the first tow company determined they lacked the proper equipment to make the recovery.
As of 1 a.m. on Tuesday, a second tow company had been contacted and was responding to attempt removal with a larger tow truck.
No other details were immediately available.
