Los Gallitos, new Mexican eatery, to open in Mission where Salsa Grill Cantina used to be

A new Mexican restaurant will replace a longtime Tex-Mex favorite in Mission that recently closed.

Los Gallitos Fresh Mexican Grill is moving into the former Salsa Grill Cantina space in the Mission West Shopping Center at 6508 Martway Street.

This is a longtime dream for Los Gallitos’ owner

  • Nereyda Torres, owner and operator of Los Gallitos, said owning her own restaurant is her dream.
  • Jennifer Bustos-Gomez, Los Gallitos’ director of operations who has worked with Torres for nearly two decades, said Torres has experience running other restaurants and being part of other ownership groups.
  • Now, Torres is opening this new Mexican restaurant entirely on her own. It’s name, which is Spanish for “little roosters,” is an homage to the nickname she’s given her twin 13-year-old sons.
  • “I respect other restaurants and their ideas, but this is mine,” Torres said. “I give 100% — not 50%, not 20%. One hundred percent.”

Los Gallitos will serve authentic and Tex-Mex food

  • Torres said the menu — coupled with the customer service — is what she hopes will set Los Gallitos apart.
  • The menu will include traditional Tex-Mex dishes like burritos.
  • More authentic dishes like a shrimp cocktail and ceviche, a fresh seafood dish marinated in citrus, are also on the menu.
  • Bustos-Gomez said the sauces on the enchiladas, for example, are ones Torres has been making for years.

The restaurant plans to open next month

  • Bustos-Gomez said the goal is to open in mid-November.
  • While there are a couple of interior upgrades to be made, she said, there are also some permits the restaurant is waiting on.
  • Torres also hopes to expand Los Gallitos to other areas in Kansas City after the Mission location opens.
