Kansas House District 5 candidates on the issues: Abortion

Today, we’re publishing candidates’ responses to the following question:

Kansas voters in 2022 rejected the “Value Them Both” amendment that, if enacted, would have declared that the state constitution does not include a right to abortion. In the two legislative sessions since, lawmakers have tried to pass new restrictions on abortion, some of which have been blocked by judicial rulings. Are you satisfied with the current laws and restrictions on abortion in Kansas? Do you think access should be expanded in any way? Do you support new restrictions on abortion? And if so, what kind?

Below are the answers the Post received from candidates on the issue:

District 5

Henry Johns (Democratic)

Following the 2022 voter rejection of the amendment proposal, Kansas Republican legislators failed to listen to the voters and have continued to attempt to restrict and take away women’s rights. I am not satisfied with the current laws and restrictions.

I believe women should have control of their own bodies, not the legislature. I trust women to make their own decisions. I do not support any new restrictions on abortion or on the medical facilities that might provide that care. I also do not support any attempted legislative control of IVF or any other reproductive procedure.

Carrie Barth (Republican, incumbent)
