Man charged with attempted murder in shooting outside Leawood assisted living community

Leawood Police allege Darrick Dekovan Miller, 32, of Kansas City, exchanged gunfire with another worker at The Healthcare Resort of Leawood.

The Johnson County District Attorney’s Office has charged a Kansas City, Missouri, man with attempted first-degree murder following a call early Tuesday morning about shots fired outside a Leawood senior living facility.

Darrick Dekovan Miller, 32, made his first court appearance on Wednesday afternoon.

Leawood Police allege that Miller and another employee of The Healthcare Resort of Leawood, 5401 W. 143rd St., were involved in a verbal argument when Miller pulled out a gun and fired multiple shots at his coworker.

Police said the man who was shot at returned fire.

No one was injured in the shooting, and no residents of the senior living facility were involved in the incident.

Miller fled the scene but was quickly located by Overland Park Police.

He was booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center later Tuesday morning on a pending charge of aggravated assault.

That charge was upgraded to attempted first-degree murder before his first appearance in court on Wednesday.

As of Friday morning, Miller remains in the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office custody on $750,000 bond.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 11 a.m.
