Lenexa Police say a woman whom officers were attempting to conduct a welfare check on was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon.
In a news release, Master Police Officer Danny Chavez, a Lenexa Police spokesperson, said officers were dispatched at about 12:30 p.m. to check on an adult female who had left a medical facility in the 23400 block of Prairie Star Parkway.
The news release identified the woman as Emily A. Porter, 53, of Lenexa.
AdventHealth Prairie Star is located at 23401 Prairie Star Parkway.
Chavez said officers went to the Porter’s home address to attempt a welfare check.
“As officers were at the residence, the woman drove past them and accelerated away at a high rate of speed,” Chavez said. “Officers activated their emergency equipment and attempted to catch up to the vehicle but remained a significant distance behind it.”
Chavez says officers located the vehicle crashed on Canyon Creek Boulevard near 100th Street.
The intersection is about 600 feet north of Kansas Highway 10.
“Officers located the vehicle’s sole occupant, the adult female, who had been ejected from the vehicle,” Chavez said. “Officers immediately began life-saving measures until paramedics arrived.”
Lenexa firefighters and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics continued the life-saving efforts on the scene.
“Despite those efforts, the woman died at the scene,” Chavez said in the release.
At the scene, a reporter could see officers using a drone to document the crash, which included a toppled street light pole and damage to the pole’s concrete base.
Lenexa Police are investigating the crash and say that speed may have been a contributing factor.
No other details have been released.
