Driver in critical condition after medical emergency on K-10 near De Soto

A Johnson County deputy spotted the vehicle heading west in the eastbound lanes near County Line Road just after noon Tuesday. Nobody else was injured.

A man in his 60s was transported in critical condition after he experienced a medical emergency while driving on Kansas Highway 10 west of De Soto early Tuesday afternoon.

According to Kristen Boxman, spokesperson for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, at about 12:15 p.m., a deputy was driving east on K-10 near County Line Road when he saw a vehicle driving westbound in the eastbound lanes.

“The deputy turned on his lights and sirens,” Boxman said. “The oncoming vehicle immediately drove off the south side of the road and stopped at the bottom of the embankment.”

Recorded radio traffic stated that the deputy broke a window after finding the driver unconscious.

Boxman said deputies started CPR and used an Automated External Defibrillator before firefighters and paramedics arrived to take over lifesaving efforts.

Arriving firefighters reported that the victim’s vehicle was not visible from K-10 and directed the responding ambulance to access the scene from 103rd Street, west of Evening Star Road.

Johnson County Med-Act paramedics, with the assistance of Northwest Consolidated firefighters, transported the man to an area hospital in critical condition.

No other details have been released.
