McLain’s, a Kansas City bakery fixture since 1945, is looking to open a new south Overland Park location.
Catch up quick: The Overland Park Planning Commission on Monday approved final development plans for a new McLain’s Market at 15102 Travis St., in the former Jersey Boyz Subs and Deli near 151st and Metcalf.
The details: With the redevelopment, the family-owned restaurant company is wanting to convert the site’s existing 3,200-square-foot building into McLain’s third Johnson County location.
- A new drive-thru window would be installed on the east side of the building, which patrons would be able to access from Travis Street.
- The plan also includes enclosing the property’s existing patio space to add additional square footage to the building, according to city documents.
Key quote: “This is a very good adapted reuse here… and I think it’s going to accommodate plenty of people,” Commissioner Ned Reitzes said. “I think this is an asset at this location in the community.”

Background: The McLain’s family opened the company’s first location in 1945 in the Waldo neighborhood in Kansas City, Mo. and ran the bakery for three generations before turning ownership over to another local family in 2001.
- In 2014, the Hirleman family then purchased the business and has since opened other stores in the region, including one at Roe Avenue and 107th Street in Overland Park.
- A second Johnson County McLain’s opened in the former OK Garage space in downtown Shawnee in 2020.

- The item is scheduled to come before the council at its Jan. 9 meeting.
