Overland Park’s Stanley Square complex to expand, get facelift

The Stanley Square Shopping Center at the northwest corner of 151st Street and U.S. Highway 69 could see a facelift and an expansion.

On Monday, the Overland Park Planning Commission greenlit a revised preliminary development plan for the improvements.

Dating back to 1987, the retail center is now home to a Rally House, Golden Belt Beef and a Dollar Tree among other stores.

The site plan envisions exterior renovations to all of the existing shops in the main strip of the shopping center, plus the addition of two new pad sites and parking lot improvements.

Henry Klover, of Lenexa-based Klover Architects, said Monday that these upgrades will be a “definite improvement” for the Stanley Square Shopping Center.

A McDonalds and BP gas station sitting right on 151st Street are not included in the Stanley Square development but the Taco Bell is.

A restaurant, drive-thru coffee shop will be added

  • In addition to the modernization of the standing retail center, Stanley Square’s footprint will also expand.
  • The plan is to add two new stand-alone pad sites for restaurants.
  • One site near Hardy Street will be a drive-thru coffee shop.
  • The other will be a sit-down restaurant on the eastern side of the development.
  • Additionally, city documents show plans to add a patio area on the tenant space closest to the highway in the Stanley Square strip building for outdoor dining.
  • A complete parking lot replacement and new sidewalks are also part of the upgrades.

  • Commissioners were also glad to see plans to improve the parking lot. Commissioner David Hill noted that the lot is currently in “bad shape.”
