New ‘action-packed’ gaming facility on its way to Overland Park

A new “live-action gaming adventure” is on its way to Johnson County.

Gaming company Activate plans to expand into Johnson County with a new Overland Park facility this year — working toward a June opening.

Activate will operate at 6900 W. 119th St.

  • The venue will move into and renovate a space off 119th Street and Metcalf Avenue, near Papa John’s and KC Craft Ramen.
  • Auto shop 4 Wheel Parts previously occupied the space, before it closed in 2022.
  • Though final hours have not yet been finalized, Activate facilities tend to operate from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.

Activate offers an ‘action-packed’ gaming experience

  • Activate facilities have multiple “micro-arenas” — rooms with different games and themes — and players can either choose one or try multiple rooms.
  • In each room, players are tasked with interactive “high-tech” challenges of varying difficulty levels, like climbing or navigating grids and laser mazes.
  • The games are geared toward groups of two to five people, and suggested for players ages 10 and above.
  • Will Gray, marketing director for Activate, said the modern technology factor is what sets Activate apart — likening it to a higher-tech, more modern version of a classic carnival game.
  • “It’s just such an immersive experience that it really delights all of the senses,” he said. “You’re running, you’re jumping, you’re climbing, you’re dodging lasers, you’re trying to work your way up a leaderboard. It’s a competitive and fun experience.”

This marks Activate’s first Johnson County location

  • It’s also the first Kansas City metro location as a whole for the company, which is headquartered in Winnipeg, Canada.
  • Activate was founded in Winnipeg, Canada in 2019, and it now has locations across the United States as well.
  • Activate serves as the latest in a growing number of gaming venues to put down roots in Johnson County, with the Andretti go-karting facility also on its way to Overland Park.
  • “Overland Park is just an incredible place full of entertainment,” Gray said. “But (Activate) is a one-of-a kind experience — there’s nothing out there right now like it. So we’re really excited to prove to Johnson County that this is something that’s going to be one of your favorite activities to do, time and time again.”
