Kansas House District 30 candidates on the issues: Abortion

Today, we’re publishing candidates’ responses to the following question:

Kansas voters in 2022 rejected the “Value Them Both” amendment that, if enacted, would have declared that the state constitution does not include a right to abortion. In the two legislative sessions since, lawmakers have tried to pass new restrictions on abortion, some of which have been blocked by judicial rulings. Are you satisfied with the current laws and restrictions on abortion in Kansas? Do you think access should be expanded in any way? Do you support new restrictions on abortion? And if so, what kind?

Below are the answers the Post received from candidates on the issue:

Each and every Kansan has the constitutional right to personal autonomy, which includes the right to make private medical decisions without government interference. Period.

On August 2, 2022, nearly 70 percent of House District 30 voted NO on the “Value Them Both” Constitutional amendment, which my opponent proudly supported. Despite the clear will of constituents, my opponent continues to vote for policies that put the government between women and their doctors. For example, she helped pass a law requiring doctors to report our personal health care information to the government. The “Survey Bill” my opponent voted for would require medical providers to ask women seeking reproductive healthcare invasive and demeaning questions. These results would then be shared with the government.

This is unacceptable and dangerous for Kansas women. Like nearly 70 percent of House District 30, I believe the government has no business getting between you and your doctor and I will always fight for a woman’s freedom over her own body.

In 2022, the people of Kansas spoke and made clear their position to allow the courts to decide this issue. I respect that decision and I am one of many Kansans who has never advocated for a complete ban on abortion and who strongly believes that we should work to advance policies which find broad consensus amongst Kansans.

I will always support exceptions to accommodate heartbreaking and difficult situations such as rape, incest, and life of the mother. I am committed to ensuring women receive the emergency care they desperately need for ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages and other health complications. I believe we need to continue to protect IVF (which is currently protected in Kansas statute) and birth control for women.

I have never voted for any legislation that would restrict access to abortion. Additionally, the Kansas Supreme Court this summer reaffirmed their previous ruling and the 2022 vote. This issue is settled. My efforts going forward will be focused on support and resources for women and children.
