Dillons grocery chain returning to Johnson County, starting in Olathe

The Kansas grocery chain plans to open a new store in Olathe, more than a decade after leaving Johnson County.

After more than a decade, a Kansas-based grocer is making its return to Johnson County.

According to a media release on Friday, grocery chain Dillons plans to expand back into the Kansas City market — starting with a new store in Olathe.

Dillons is coming to College Avenue and Sunnybrook Boulevard

  • The grocery store plans to occupy a site at College Boulevard and Sunnybrook Boulevard (near Lone Elm Road).
  • There, it will operate near Meadow Lane Elementary School, the Primrose School of North Olathe and Kansas State University’s Olathe campus.
  • A construction timeline for the new store has not yet been determined, according to the release.

This marks Dillons’ return to Johnson County

  • Before leaving the area in 2008, the company — now owned by Kroger — had stores in Olathe and Shawnee.
  • According to the release, the new Olathe store will serve as the beginning of a broader expansion plan in the area for Dillons.
  • “While the specific details are not complete, we are currently collaborating with the City of Olathe to finalize plans for the building and site and are thankful for their partnership,” said Steve Dreher, division president for Dillons, via the release. “This announcement marks not only Dillon’s return, but the beginning of our journey in the KC market.”

The site of a former Dillons is also getting new life

  • Meanwhile, one of Johnson County’s former Dillons sites is about to get a new grocery store of its own in Shawnee.
  • Hispanic grocer El Mercado Fresco plans to take over that space, at the Westbrooke Green Shopping Center.
  • It will serve as the first Johnson County store for El Mercado Fresco, though World Fresh Market in Overland Park is under the same ownership.
