Former First Watch space in southern Overland Park now home to sushi restaurant

The owners of Sakura Sushi Train in Shawnee opened their newest concept in September, serving sushi and boba tea.

A former breakfast eatery space in Overland Park has officially entered a new era, trading French toast and omelets for sushi and boba tea.

The family behind Sakura Sushi Train in Shawnee opened their newest concept, Umami Revolving Sushi, in Overland Park in September.

Umami Revolving Sushi opened at 8180 W. 135th St.

  • The restaurant took over a space at the Overland Pointe Marketplace, near Longboards Wraps & Bowls and Robeks Fresh Juices & Smoothies.
  • Breakfast and brunch eatery First Watch previously occupied that space for roughly five years, before it closed in February.
  • Umami Revolving Sushi is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch, and 5 to 9 p.m. for dinner, Monday through Thursday.
  • Then on Friday and Saturday, they’re open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., for lunch, and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • On Sunday, they’ open from 11:30 a.m. to to 2 p.m. for lunch, and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. for dinner on Sunday.

The restaurant serves sushi, boba tea and more

At Umami, rolls of sushi glide toward tables on a conveyor belt, and customers can decide what to take as they roll by.

Shayla Young, daughter of co-owner Trung “Tom” Nguyen and manager at Umami, said one of the restaurant’s best-sellers so far has been the “KC” roll, with shrimp tempura, avocado and cream cheese topped with fried crab meat, spicy mayo and eel sauce.

There’s also the “Wonder Woman” roll, which has tamago, cream cheese, shrimp tempura, crab meat and avocado topped with spicy mayo, and eatery’s version of crab rangoon.

Outside of sushi, Umami Revolving Sushi also has a boba tea bar, which serves both milk and fruit teas.

Later on, its owners say Umami’s menu will expand with some Vietnamese offerings that aren’t on the menu at Sakura — such as pho (a Vietnamese noodle soup) and spring rolls.

The owners are not new to the JoCo restaurant scene

Tom Nguyen, owner of Umami Revolving Sushi, has owned and operated Sakura Sushi Train near 75th and Nieman in Shawnee for roughly 25 years.

Sakura later opened an Olathe location in 2015. That one closed earlier this year after roughly a decade, but Young said the new Overland Park restaurant serves as a reinvention of sorts for the Olathe spot.

“The area that we were originally in, in Olathe, was just not a lot of foot traffic,” she said. “Here, we were hoping that with (U.S. Highway 69), there will be more people coming in.”

Tom launched Umami Revolving Sushi with Chinh Nguyen, his brother and Young’s uncle.

In its first couple of weeks up and running, Young said Umami has seen lots of familiar faces from their other restaurant trickle in to see what’s new.

“We’ve had a lot of regular customers from (Sakura) come, and we did have a lot of new faces show up,” she said. “So that was great to see.”
