Brew Haha Coffeehouse is expanding into Shawnee

The coffee shop will take over a space near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Pflumm that has seen a revolving door of businesses.

The revolving door at a drive-thru spot in Shawnee has taken another turn. After less than a year, Simon’s Pasta has closed its doors in Shawnee.

The space off Shawnee Mission Parkway, home to Saints Pub Express before Simon’s Pasta moved in, is quiet for now. But it won’t be quiet for long.

If all goes according to plan, then customers will be pulling up to its drive-thru window to grab their morning coffee soon. Overland Park-based Brew Haha Coffeehouse is in the process of expanding into the Shawnee space.

Owner Jason Presley said he hopes to “soft open” the new shop in January.

Brew Haha is coming to 13655 W. 63rd St.

  • The coffee shop’s second location will bring new life to a space just off Pflumm Road and Shawnee Mission Parkway, near Fritz’s Railroad Restaurant.
  • Simon’s Pasta was the most recent occupant of the space, but Sheridan’s Frozen Custard also previously operated there.
  • Once Brew Haha opens, its regular hours in Shawnee will be 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.

Brew Haha will offer coffee on the go

Brew Haha’s menu features a variety of coffee drinks, from classics like americanos and cold brews to cappuccinos and seasonal flavored lattes (with house-made syrups).

In addition to coffee, the shop also serves other drinks like fogs (tea lattes), hibiscus lemonades and Italian sodas.

Given that the building lends itself primarily to drive-thru operations, the Shawnee space will serve as sort of an “express” location for Brew Haha. The Shawnee location will also serve Brew Haha’s gluten-free pastries, while holding off on some of its other food items (like crepes and breakfast burritos) at least initially.

But during the warmer months, customers who aren’t on the go will be able to enjoy their drinks on the coffee shop’s outdoor patio.

“It’s got a really good patio area,” he said. “It’ll have more of a seating area outside than our location here (in Overland Park).”

This marks Brew Haha’s second shop in Johnson County

Presley initially opened Brew Haha’s flagship location in 2019, off 103rd Street and U.S. Highway 69 in Overland Park.

After getting established, Presley said Brew Haha experimented with expansion into some locations inside other venues — most recently, inside a church in Kansas City, Missouri.

But with limitations to outside signage, Presley said those types of locations proved difficult to advertise. The new Shawnee location will serve as Brew Haha’s second standalone shop.

Given that western Shawnee doesn’t have many options as far as locally owned coffee goes, Presley said he’s looking forward to filling a gap in the market.

“It really excites us to be able to serve the Shawnee area — a very underserved area, in relation to that aspect,” he said. “We’re just really looking forward to
getting it open.”
