With the new year underway, the Post is keeping tabs on some big development projects in the continuously-growing city of Shawnee.
From new developments to renovation projects downtown, here are some of the prominent projects in Shawnee that we’ve got our eyes on.
Westbrooke Green — 75th Street and Quivira Road
After years of discussion and decay, the Westbrooke Green Shopping Center got some major movement with the promise of Hispanic grocer El Mercado Fresco taking over the former Dillon’s space.
The news came about year after the Shawnee City Council approved a resolution and restated redevelopment agreement for the derelict strip mall at 75th Street and Quivira Road, which put the project in the hands of a new Kansas City, Missouri-based developer called Westbrooke Partners LLC.
In addition to the grocer, the shopping center is getting improvements to its facade and signage, resurfacing of the parking lot, repairing sidewalks and rehabilitating landscaping.
The old Wonderscope space — 5700 King St.
Another property that sat vacant for years, the old Wonderscope museum property in downtown Shawnee will undergo huge changes as the building will be turned apartments with 40 units and the property will have 14 two-story attached residential townhome units built on it.
Originally an elementary school, the property had been vacant since 2020, with the only public discussion happening in Novemger 2023 when a real estate panel discussed viable options for the space, such as a boutique hotel and brownstone apartments.
Both measures were approved by the Shawnee Planning Commission in December 2025 and earlier this month, with praise for the new vision for the property.
Garrett Park — 22325 W. 47th St.
Closed since summer 2025, Garrett Park will re-open on March 7 with a number of improvements.
The park will feature a new playground, updated baseball field fencing and backstop, partial trail replacement, renovated restrooms and new pickleball courts, among other additions.
A new part of the park, the National Fitness Campaign Fitness Court near West 48th Street and Monticello Road, opened in November.
The new playground will feature the Volo Aire by Landscape Structures, a three-story structure with both a winding ramp and a vertical climber to the top. It will also have two in-ground bouncers, a playhouse designed for children ages 2-5 and a variety of swings.
Harmony at Clear Creek — Silverheel Street and K-7
A year after the Shawnee City Council approved a final plat for the 40-acre project, which includes single-family homes and townhomes, construction is now underway for the project.
Located along Silverheel Street near Kansas Highway 7, the project is made up of 188 residential units, including 97 single-family homes as well as 91 townhome units across 20 buildings.
The development has been in discussion since 2022, when Material Capital Partners submitted the project to the Shawnee’s governing body. In October, Material Capital Partners broke ground on the property.
Cedar Trace — Silverheel Street and Monticello Road
Shawnee will be getting a new subdivision consisting mostly of duplexes on the southwestern side of the city.
In mid-2025, the Shawnee Planning Commission approved the rezoning and preliminary development plan for Cedar Trace, a 5.6-acre development between Silverheel Street and Monticello Road.
The planned subdivision contains 21 attached single-family dwelling units in 10 duplex buildings and one existing single-family home on a new public cul-de-sac connecting to 75th Street.
The duplex buildings will include a mix of one and two-story structures. All units will have a full basement and two-car garage.
Hidden Creek Reserve Townhomes — Hedge Lane Terrace
After facing delays, construction is underway for this planned 13-acre, multifamily residential project, located just west of K-7 Highway near the Chapel Creek subdivision and Shawnee Golf & Country Club.
Previously, interest rates put the project on hold indefinitely, but work eventually resumed.
The project includes 60 residential units in 16 attached townhome-style buildings.
