Fireworks sparked Olathe duplex fire that displaced 13 people, officials say

Olathe Fire officials said nobody was injured in the blaze that did "significant" damage to one unit of a duplex-style residence near 151st and Ridgeview.

Update: Monday, June 29, 3:30 p.m.

The Olathe Fire Department says fireworks caused a fire at a duplex Sunday night that displaced 13 people and caused $150,000 in damage.

The department gave the update on Facebook on Monday morning, the day after crews were called to the duplex-style residence on East 152nd Street.

“The use of fireworks ignited a wooden deck and caused the blaze, according to an investigator,” the department wrote on Facebook.

There were no injuries reported.

The sale, possession and use of fireworks is not allowed in Olathe.

“Have a safe Fourth of July season by leaving fireworks to the professionals – attend a public display,” the Olathe Fire Department’s update said. “Public displays take many safety precautions and create great shows.”

The Olathe Fire Department says seven people were displaced by a fire at a duplex-style home Sunday evening.

On Facebook, the department said that fire crews were called to a residence at 1327 E. 152nd St. at around 7:30 p.m.

That address is just southwest of Ridgeview Road and 151st Street, near Olathe South High School.

Investigators say the fire was contained to one unit in the duplex but that damage was significant.

An edited video that accompanied Olathe Fire’s Facebook post showed the back of the duplex badly damaged, with a charred exterior and destroyed deck.

Seven people were displaced by the fire, but nobody was injured, Olathe Fire said in its Facebook post.

The Olathe Police Department and Johnson County Med-Act paramedics also responded to the scene on Sunday to assist.

Olathe Fire said investigators were looking into the cause of the fire.

“Every fire is a great reminder to check your home’s smoke alarms by simply pressing the test button,” Olathe Fire said on Facebook.
