A Shawnee man was seriously injured when a fleeing suspect side-swiped his vehicle near the Johnson-Wyandotte County line on Thursday, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Authorities took the suspect, an Edgerton man, into custody following the incident, which began with a traffic stop in far southern Johnson County and involved multiple local agencies.
On Thursday, the suspect, Jason W. Sisney, 27, was booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center. It is the third time he has been arrested in the past 90 days, according to court records.
Incident began with a traffic stop in southern JoCo
Kristen Boxman, public communications manager for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, told the Post that a deputy attempted to stop a suspect vehicle from an “incident that occurred in Edgerton.”
“The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle around 11:22 a.m. [Thursday],” Boxman told the Post in an emailed response to questions. “We attempted to stop the vehicle on northbound I-35 near 199th Street.”
Boxman said the suspect driver did not stop for the deputy and that the deputy “discontinued the attempt.”
The Kansas Highway Patrol located the same SUV as it continued north on I-35 and again attempted to stop the driver.
Bystander driver injured near I-35 and Lamar Avenue
The suspect refused to stop, and the pursuit was again called off as the suspect’s SUV passed under I-635 in Overland Park.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s online crash log, Sisney was driving a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV north on I-35 “after a police pursuit was discontinued.”
Troopers said that at approximately 11:39 a.m., Sisney took the exit ramp to Lamar Avenue, ran a red light and crashed into the passenger’s side of a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis.
The I-35 and Lamar Avenue interchange is less than 150 feet inside Wyandotte County.
The driver of the Mercury, a 66-year-old Shawnee man, was trapped inside his damaged car after the crash.
Firefighters from Consolidated Fire District No. 2 safely extricated the injured driver, who was then taken to a nearby hospital by Johnson County Med-Act paramedics. Troopers said the man sustained a “suspected serious injury.”
Sisney was taken into custody after the crash.
While in police custody, he was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
A long list of prior cases
Online Johnson County Sheriff’s Office booking logs show Sisney was booked into the Adult Detention Center at 12:12 p.m. on Thursday.
As of early Friday, he remains in custody on pending charges of felony possession and misdemeanor fleeing/eluding a police officer.
Online court records show Sisney was out on bond following his April 17, 2026, arrest by the Lenexa Police Department.
In that case, Sisney was charged with three felonies and one misdemeanor. All charges are related to the distribution and possession of drugs. His most serious charge from the April arrest is for distribution of fentanyl.
He was released on $75,000 bond on April 22.
Jail records show Sisney has been booked into the Johnson County Adult Detention Center seven times since April 2024. Thursday’s arrest marks his third time in the Johnson County jail this year.
His previous arrests include aggravated assault, felony drug possession/distribution and driving under the influence.
Sisney is scheduled to appear in court for his newest case on Friday afternoon.
