After losing its grocery store earlier this year, an Overland Park shopping center appears to be getting another one.
Iowa-based grocery Hy-Vee has filed plans to open a new grocery store at the Rosana Square shopping center, nearly ten months after Price Chopper closed its store there.
The Overland Park Planning Commission on Monday approved a final development plan for the new Hy-Vee at Rosana Square as part of its consent agenda, meaning it was approved with other items with no discussion.
Hy-Vee is coming to 7418 W. 119th St.
- The grocery store wants to occupy a roughly 66,000-square-foot space at the Rosana Square shopping center.
- There, it would operate near Guitars & Cadillacs and Clint’s Comedy Club.
- According to plans reviewed this week by the Overland Park Planning Commission, Hy-Vee aims to make a few changes to the existing space, including adding a pharmacy drive-thru and new loading docks.
- Commission documents also note that the owner of the Rosana Square shopping center has filed plans to “alter the exterior of the entire shopping center.” That broader plan is set to be considered at the commission’s next meeting in November.
Price Chopper closed earlier this year

- Price Chopper, owned by Kansas City-based Cosentino’s, left the Rosana Square shopping center in January after multiple decades there.
- “Cosentino’s extends its sincere gratitude to the loyal customers and team members who have supported the 119th and Metcalf Ave location over the years,” John Cosentino, owner and vice president of Cosentino Group, said at the time in a news release.
- Cosentino’s announcement did not indicate why the Price Chopper on 119th closed, though there has been increasing competition among grocery stores in the area around 119th and Blue Valley Parkway. At least five other grocery stores operate nearby, including a relocated Whole Foods, a Pan-Asia Supermarket that moved last year and an Aldi.
- Another Overland Park Price Chopper closed last year, near 75th Street and Metcalf Avenue. That one was owned by Mission-based Balls Foods closed.
Hy-Vee already has several Johnson County stores
- The Iowa-based grocery store company already has two Overland Park locations, one off 95th Street and Antioch Road and another further south neaer 135th and Antioch.
- Outside of Overland Park, Hy-Vee has Johnson County stores in Prairie Village, Lenexa, Mission, Shawnee and Olathe.
- The company is also planning another new store in western Lenexa.
- Across the state line, Hy-Vee also has two stores in Kansas City, Missouri.
