‘Modern’ Indian eatery Jala Indian Cuisine now open in Overland Park

The restaurant, which got its start in Florida, celebrated its opening in September off 135th Street in Overland Park.

Where diners once sipped coffee and devoured stacks of pancakes, they’re now enjoying Indian dishes — some of which are dusted with gold.

Florida-born eatery Jala Indian Cuisine recently made its Johnson County debut, in the former Another Broken Egg Cafe space in Overland Park.

Jala opened at 13386 Metcalf Ave.

  • The restaurant took over a space at the Deer Creek Woods shopping center, just off 135th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park.
  • Another Broken Egg occupied that space for roughly five years before its closure in 2025.
  • Jala is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

On the menu at Jala, customers can find classic dishes from chicken tandoori, goat biryani, paneer butter masala and chicken vindaloo.

Jala is also known for its “24K” and “Imperial Gold” entrees and breads, which are dusted with edible gold.

“(My father) wanted to bring a modern approach to Indian food,” said co-owner Jeffrey Soloman about Jala’s founder, chef Maax Soloman. “It was kind of like, how can we make a concept that is so widely popular — because Indian food is so popular — and how can we put our own unique twist on it?”

The former breakfast eatery space itself has been transformed into one with lots of velvet, greenery, soft pinks and gold finishes.

“We want everyone to be like, ‘OK, this is not a typical Indian restaurant we just walked into,’” Soloman said. “It’s very upbeat, trendy, put-together.”

The Overland Park location is the second location overall for the Jala concept, which debuted in Florida in 2025.

Jala isn’t the owners’ first restaurant either. Soloman Investment Group Worldwide, the ownership group behind Jala, owns several more restaurants internationally.

Overland Park, Soloman said, felt much like Winter Park (the affluent Florida city where Jala got its start).

Getting Jala off the ground in Overland Park had been a lengthy process, from finalizing the menu to putting together all of the decor details of the space.

It’s been rewarding, he said, to see people enjoy the concept he and his family put a lot of work and time into — and the recipes they grew up on.

“Jala is a part of our tradition now,” he said. “It’s not just a restaurant for us. We put our blood, sweat, and tears into this place.”
