Overland Park Police step up patrols following 3 reported assaults near city parks and trails

The reported assaults happened at Wilderness Lake Park, Rosehill East Park and near Nall Park, but police say they believe the incidents are not connected.

Overland Park Police have ramped up bike patrols around city parks and trails following multiple reported assaults, including a sexual assault.

The three reported assaults are at different parks and at different times of day, dating back to early August, according to a police department news release on Wednesday.

OPPD “does not believe these incidents are connected,” the release said.

The police department says that the first reported assault occurred at Wilderness Lake Park in southern Overland Park on Aug. 8 at roughly 8 p.m.

Another assault was reported at Rosehill East Park at roughly 1 a.m. on Sept. 10.

The most recent reported assault occurred shortly after 12:30 p.m. this past Monday near Nall Park in northern Overland Park.

All cases include reports of “a man who would approach a woman from behind,” the news release said.

At least one of these incidents was an alleged sexual assault, Officer John Lacy told the Post in an email. Lacy also said the victim in that incident “may know the suspect.” So far, no charges have been filed in that case.

“This case has been assigned and is actively being investigated,” Lacy told the Post.

In response to the reported assaults, the department urged the public to “stay aware of their surroundings.

“The Police Department also encourages community members to call 911 if they observe any suspicious activity at any City park or trail,” the news release said.
