JoCo Notes: Why your Kansas groceries are a bit cheaper now

Happy Wednesday, Shawnee Mission!

☀️ Today’s forecast: Mostly sunny with a slight breeze. High: 41, Low: 26.

? One thing to know

Starting this week, you may notice your groceries are a bit cheaper in Kansas.

That’s because a new law lowering the state’s sales tax on food went into effect on New Year’s Day.

The law lowers the sales tax on many food items to 4% from 6.5%. That includes many staples like milk, eggs and bread.

Some things, like alcohol and prepared food items, will still be taxed at the higher rate.

Under the current law, the state food sales tax is set to be completely phased out by 2025, but Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly has called on the GOP-dominated legislature to pass a measure zeroing out the tax this year.
