Discount retail chain Five Below, which specializes in selling items for $5 or less, is working to soon open its first location in Overland Park.
Where exactly: The Philadelphia-based retailer is eyeing a Friday, Dec. 9, opening for its new 9,000-square-foot location at 12070 Metcalf Ave. in the Overland Crossing shopping center, according to the company’s website.
- The space had been previously occupied by U.S. Toy Co., which closed earlier this year to focus on selling to larger wholesale customers and doing business online.
- Five Below is one of eight new tenants expected to open at the retail center by 2024, according to officials with Legacy Development, who owns and operates the shopping center.
Store details: Five Below sells a variety of items between $1 and $5, including toys, games, clothing, accessories, decor, candy, beauty supplies and tech accessories.
- While most items do not exceed $5, there is also some “Five Beyond” merchandise that costs $6 or more, including for tech, room decor and pet supplies.
- The retailer also sells name-brand items from companies like Nickelodeon, Hershey’s and Disney.
Background: Founded in 2002, Five Below now has nearly 1,300 stores in 40 states.
- The first Johnson County location opened more than five years ago at the Olathe Pointe shopping center.
- Five Below CEO Joel Anderson said the company is aiming to triple its store count by 2030.

The addition of Five Below at Overland Crossing is just one of several measures Legacy is taking to increase density at the complex adjacent to the Blue Valley North campus in Overland Park.
- Discount department store chain Nordstrom Rack recently announced it is working to open a new 27,000-square-foot location at the center next fall.
- In October, the Overland Park Planning Commission approved plans to bring drive-thru coffee shop 151 Coffee and G Fairways, a golf simulator company, as well.
- Whole Foods is also relocating to Overland Crossing from its location at The Fountains shopping center, one block east at 119th and Glenwood streets.
