UPDATES: Standoff at Prairie Village home ends with 1 man in custody

Prairie Village Police arrested a man following an overnight standoff at a house in the 8000 block of Nall Avenue.

In a news release Thursday morning, Sgt. Josh Putthoff says officers were called to the house for a verbal disturbance involving a firearm at 11:49 p.m., Wednesday.

In a follow up email to the Post, Prairie Village Police Capt. Eric McCullough said one person inside the residence was able to exit the home about 12:19 a.m., leaving another person inside alone.

It was then, McCullough said, responding officers heard multiple gunshots from inside the home.

A tactical team was requested to respond, but the man inside the home “peacefully surrendered” to on-scene officers just around 2 a.m. before the tactical team arrived, McCullough said.

Officers from at least seven local law enforcement agencies responded to assist Prairie Village Police, including drones.

Multiple homes immediately surrounding the house were evacuated as a precaution. Residents not willing to leave their homes were urged to shelter in place, McCullough said.

“No one was injured, and the subject was taken into custody without incident,” Putthoff said in the earlier Prairie Village Police statement. “The subject was then transported to the Johnson County Adult Detention Center to face criminal charges.”

An online booking log shows the man, listed as being born in 1986, is being held on a charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

His residence is listed as the home where the standoff occurred.

In response to questions, McCullough said Prairie Village Police have been to that residence “multiple times” before and “it is familiar to many of our patrol officers.”
