Formal dress shop Bella Bridesmaids trades Leawood for downtown Overland Park

The shop reopened in a new downtown Overland Park space in September, after roughly a decade in Leawood.

After more than a decade in Leawood, a boutique with a specialty for the formal side has officially headed north.

Dress shop Bella Bridesmaids left its Leawood space at 5210 W. 116th Place for new digs in downtown Overland Park, reopening there in September.

Bella Bridesmaids opened at 7319 W. 79th St.

  • The shop moved into a space on the north side of downtown Overland Park, just off 79th and Marty streets.
  • The Overland Park Historical Society previously occupied that space.
  • The store is also just north of the Overland Park farmers market pavilion site, which is currently undergoing reconstruction.

Bella Bridesmaids offers formal dresses for all occasions

As the name implies, Bella Bridesmaids offers bridesmaids dresses in a lot of colors and styles.

But it’s not all about the bridesmaids. The shop also carries a variety of dresses geared toward the mother of the bride, “junior” bridesmaids and flower girls — as well as dresses for guests at weddings and other formal events.

“Brides already have so much going on, and I think it’s our goal to kind of rein that in and make sure that when they come in here, we’re the ones taking care of everybody,” said Ava Waitley, a stylist at Bella Bridesmaids. “It’s so fun to work with brides and make sure their day is exactly what they want.”

Bella Bridesmaids even offers some dresses more geared toward the bride. Not full-blown wedding gowns, but “little white dresses” for occasions like rehearsal dinners and bridal showers.

Price points at Bella Bridesmaids generally range from $150 to $1,500.

“We have everything from classic all-black to colorful and whimsical patterns,” said Angela Schell, franchise owner of the Overland Park shop. “We cover it all.”

Bella Bridesmaids was in Leawood for about a decade

Roughly 10 years ago, the Illinois-based shop’s Kansas City franchise relocated to Johnson County from the Brookside neighborhood in Kansas City, Missouri.

The shop operated at Leawood’s Park Place shopping center for more than 10 years before it moved to downtown Overland Park.

Schell said the decision to relocate the store further north came, in part, from the growth and activity surrounding the area — especially with the farmers market nearby.

Bella Bridesmaids also seemed to fit in well among the neighboring businesses, she said — including a new wedding venue just down 79th Street.

“There’s a lot of synergy here,” Schell said. “It all feels like one big family.”
