Downtown Olathe keeps growing — and now it has a KC favorite to show for it

Third Street Social, known for shrimp and grits and craft cocktails, has opened its first Johnson County location on Kansas Avenue.

A popular Kansas City eatery has officially made its Johnson County debut.

On Thursday, “Midwest-inspired” eatery Third Street Social celebrated its grand opening in downtown Olathe, marking the latest step of growth in the area.

Third Street Social opened at 135 S. Kansas Ave.

  • The restaurant took over a 8,000 square-foot space just off Loula Street and Kansas Avenue in downtown Olathe.
  • The space, near the Johnson County Administration Building, was previously used as a city technology office building.
  • Third Street Social’s regular hours in Olathe are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.

  • The restaurant is based on the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro area, with locations in Kansas City, Missouri’s Northland and South Plaza, and in Lee’s Summit.
  • Third Street Social is known for “elevated” comfort food dishes like shrimp and grits, chicken fried steak, and fried catfish — as well as a variety of craft cocktails.
  • “We’ve always believed our restaurants should feel like an extension of the community, a place to gather.” said Domhnall Molloy, owner of Third Street Social, via a news release. “Expanding into Kansas is a meaningful milestone for us, and we’re excited to bring our style of hospitality and chef-driven menu to Olathe.”

More restaurants are coming to downtown Olathe

  • The arrival of Third Street Social serves as the latest new addition to downtown Olathe, most recently following fellow Kansas City eatery Pizza 51 last year.
  • Barbecue restaurant Char Bar also plans to open a new location at 200 Santa Fe St. in the growing area — one complete with pickleball courts.
  • Local bar and grill Austins also has a new restaurant in the works on Cherry Street near Johnson County Square.
