Yemeni coffee shops are on the rise in JoCo, with new one planned for downtown Mission

A Mission shop would serve as the first in Johnson County for New York-based chain Moka & Co. Several other Yemeni-themed joints have opened locally in recent months.

Amid the sudden rise in popularity of Yemeni coffee shops across Johnson County, one northeastern JoCo suburb has been missing out.

Until now.

New York-based Moka & Co has a new shop in the works just off Johnson Drive in downtown Mission.

Moka & Co is coming to 5922 Barkley St.

  • The coffee shop plans to occupy a space at the Cornerstone Commons, just off Johnson Drive and Barkley Street in Mission.
  • There, it will operate near McDonald’s and dirty soda shop Swig.
  • The space was previously occupied by fast-casual eatery PepperJax Grill.

Moka & Co boasts “exquisite” Yemeni coffee

  • The menu offers a variety of coffee drinks made with organic beans from Yemen, and incorporating spices like cinnamon, cardamom and saffron.
  • Some of its menu items include classics like americanos and cortados, in addition to “signature” lattes like pistachio or Dubai chocolate, and traditional Yemeni drinks like mufawar.
  • Outside of coffee, Moka & Co also serves tea drinks like chai and matcha, as well as flavored refreshers and smoothies.

Yemeni coffee is on the rise in Johnson County

  • Though this New York-based company is new to Johnson County, Yemeni coffee shops already have a quickly-growing presence in the county.
  • Further south, the county’s first Yemeni coffee shop, Mocha Point, opened in Overland Park earlier this year.
  • Another Yemeni coffee shop, R Qahwah, also opened in Overland Park in June near 91st and Metcalf.
  • Arabic coffee shop Turath Coffee also opened in Overland Park earlier this year, though that shop does not have a specific Yemeni focus.
