It’s been a busy few months at the southwest corner of 83rd Street and Mission Road in Prairie Village.
Following a recent revamp, the Corinth Quarter shopping center has gained multiple new businesses lately. Healthy eatery Flower Child will open its doors in mid-August, followed later this year by locally owned sandwich shop La Fetta.
Between the two restaurant spaces faces another recent arrival: this one for Prairie Village’s four-legged residents. Local pet retailer Brookside Barkery recently unveiled its new store at the growing shopping center.
Brookside Barkery opened at 3935 W. 83rd St.
- The store occupies a space on the north end of the Corinth Quarter shopping center, just off 83rd Street and Mission Road.
- Brookside Barkery is between Flower Child and La Fetta there, and it’s also near fast-casual eatery Panera Bread.
- Brookside Barkery’s regular hours in Prairie Village are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Brookside Barkery offers healthy pet treats, toy, grooming and more
The local pet retailer offers a wide variety of pet eats and treats, with a focus on healthy ingredients.
“We don’t have any fillers in there — no corn, no soy, no wheat,” said owner Brian Murphy.
In fact, Brookside Barkery is in the process of reorganizing all of its stores into a “solution-based” format, meaning that customers will be able to go straight to the section marked by their pet’s lifestyle or health needs (weight issues, digestive issues, or skin issues, for some examples) and go from there.
In addition to what that will mean for the store’s floor plan, Murphy said it also means they’ll be adding more specialized foods and supplements designed to target those common issues.
“That idea came from our own customers,” Murphy said. “When they walk in, they say ‘My dog’s got flaky skin, or my dog’s got itchy feet, or my dog’s licking their paws.’ “Where we excel is when people need solutions — healthy solutions — for their pets. So we’re going to set our stores up the way our customers shop (with) us.”
Brookside Barkery is also known for its grooming services, which Murphy said have already become popular at the new Prairie Village store.
In addition to its brick-and-mortar stores, Brookside Barkery also launched Instabark, the company’s same-day home delivery service.
“We wanted to give the customers an alternative to the big national brands,” he said. “We truly believe that the food we sell is healthier for the dog and cat, and we know that it’s less expensive than the big national brands.”
Brookside Barkery has several stores across Johnson County
The Murphy family took over ownership of Brookside Bakery in 2022. Since then, they’ve given the brand a considerable footprint in Johnson County.
Outside of Prairie Village, Brookside Barkery now has Johnson County stores in Overland Park, Leawood, Shawnee and Gardner.
This summer, the family behind Brookside Barkery also took over ownership of fellow pet supply retailer Four Paws Pantry & Spa in Olathe. That’s not where the growth ends, either.
Another new store is currently in the works further south, at the growing Bluhawk shopping center in southern Overland Park. That store is slated for a spring or summer 2027 opening.
“That’s been a long time coming,” Murphy said. “Another great development on the southern side of Kansas City that we just thought we had to be a part of.”
As for Prairie Village, Murphy said, the expansion to that city has been years in the making too.
“Prairie Village is part of our bigger strategy to have enough stores in the southern part of Kansas City to be convenient for almost 90% of (the metro area),” he said. “I think that the customers are very excited that we’re here and we’re more convenient for them. If you live in Prairie Village, you (didn’t) have a lot of great options to get healthy dog food. Now you do.”
