Chick-fil-A wants to take over former On the Border site near Oak Park Mall

The fast-casual chain's proposed move, just down the street in Overland Park, would be part of a larger redevelopment of the mall site at 95th and Quivira.

Popular fast-casual chain Chick-fil-A wants to relocate from one spot to another near Oak Park Mall in Overland Park.

The company recently filed plans to potentially move from its current home near the southwest corner of the mall to a spot on 95th Street, on the north side of the mall, where the On The Border Mexican restaurant used to operate.

Chick-fil-A aims to move to 11855 W. 95th St.

  • Site plans say the restaurant wants to move to a site just off 95th Street and Quivira Road, facing 95th on the south side of the street, just north of the mall’s parking lot.
  • It would be moving from 9707 Quivira Road, where the restaurant has operated since 2008.
  • The plan has yet to be approved by the city, and company officials did not have an estimated timeline for any move or reopening when reached this week.

On The Border closed there last year

  • The Tex-Mex eatery closed its doors near Oak Park Mall in early 2025.
  • At the time of its closure, On The Border had been operating there for more than 15 years.
  • The restaurant near Oak Park Mall was On The Border’s only remaining location in Johnson County when it closed.

Other changes could be on the horizon for the Oak Park Mall

  • Chick-fil-A’s plans come as one piece of a larger puzzle, with CBL Properties, Oak Park Mall’s Tennessee-based owner, which is proposing a major rezoning to pave the way for more development on the mall property.
  • If approved, the plans could bring other new restaurants, as well as a hotel, apartments, more green space and a performing arts center.
  • The existing two-story mall is also seeing changes inside, including multiple incoming stores like sports retailer JD Sports and budget-friendly cosmetics chain Miss A.
