Blue Valley cancels classes Wednesday for Super Bowl parade

The Blue Valley School District has made it official: the district will cancel classes Wednesday ahead of an expected parade in Kansas City celebrating the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win.

The district announced the news on social media Monday, the morning after the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII.

The district said that “after much discussion,” it was determined that maintaining a “normal” school day would be too difficult due to anticipated high absences among students and faculty.

This means Blue Valley also will not hold the parent-teacher conferences that were initially scheduled for Wednesday. District officials said those will be rescheduled.

Blue Valley students in kindergarten through eighth grade were already set to have Thursday off and all students in the district have Friday off as part of the district’s calendar.

This follows the Shawnee Mission District’s announcement of its own closure this Wednesday, along with USD 232 in De Soto and Olathe Public Schools forming their own plans for cancellations last week.
