The Vital Stretch, studio focused on flexibility, opens in Leawood

The Leawood studio also serves as the first studio in the wider Kansas City metro area for the Connecticut-based company.

A new wellness studio specializing in flexibility has officially made its Johnson County debut.

The Vital Stretch, a Connecticut-based company that focuses on assisted stretching, opened its new Leawood studio earlier this summer, with a grand opening event planned for Sept. 18.

The Vital Stretch opened at 4837 W. 135th St.

  • The studio moved into a space just off 135th Street and Roe Avenue, near Nick Bolton Fitness and strength training studio Discover Strength.
  • Local boutique TeaElla previously occupied that space before closing its Leawood location in 2024.
  • The Vital Stretch is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The studio offers “redefined” assisted stretching

The Vital Stretch offers one-on-one sessions during which licensed practitioners help clients stretch.

At the front of the Leawood studio, The Vital Stretch also offers retail items like pain relief creams, stretching straps and massage guns.

Jeff Baker, manager of The Vital Stretch in Leawood, said the target audience for a concept like theirs tends to be older adults or those recovering from injuries, though some clients are there as a preventative measure, not for recovery.

“As a personal trainer, I’ve seen many people start their process off at a later stage than they should and then they get injured,” he said. “Most people that come in here, they understand the idea of stretching, but they don’t really realize how beneficial it is and how different they’re going to feel (afterward).”

Before sessions, clients undergo a detailed fitness assessment where practitioners can determine which areas to target.

“We want to make sure we’re customizing this program specifically for people’s needs,” Baker said.

This marks the first Vital Stretch studio in Johnson County

  • The Leawood studio also serves as the first studio in the wider Kansas City metro area for the company.
  • In addition to its origin state of Connecticut, The Vital Stretch has studios in several other states, including Minnesota, Texas, Florida and New York.
